(Senior) Data Engineer

At Valcon, we are looking for a Senior Data Engineer who not only brings technical expertise but also has the ability to guide junior team members and bring the team to another level. In this role, you will be responsible for designing and optimizing data infrastructures and driving innovation within our dynamic engineering team.
 

What are you going to do?

As a Senior Data Engineer at Valcon, you will have the opportunity to lead end-to-end data engineering projects, from gathering requirements to implementing and delivering technical solutions. You will play a crucial role in developing and optimizing data pipelines and architectures for ETL/ELT processes, ensuring that data flows efficiently and reliably.
Collaborating with cross-functional teams, you will work closely with data scientists, analysts, and business stakeholders to align technical solutions with organizational goals. You will be responsible for ensuring scalability and performance of data solutions that handle large volumes of structured and unstructured data.
With your technical background, you will apply DevOps and CI/CD principles to streamline development workflows and automate deployments. Additionally, you will take the lead in introducing new tools, technologies, and frameworks to continuously improve data infrastructure.
Finally, You will also mentor junior team members, supporting their professional growth, and fostering a culture of learning within the team.

Experience

  • A completed technical WO or HBO education with WO thinking and working level.
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, including significant project leadership.
  • Strong proficiency in programming languages such as Python, PySpark, or Scala, and frameworks like Apache Spark or Databricks.
  • Proven experience designing and implementing data pipelines, data lakes, and data warehouses (e.g., using Azure Synapse, Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, or equivalent).
  • Expertise in cloud platforms like Azure, AWS, or GCP, with a focus on scalable and cost-efficient architectures.
  • Familiarity with streaming data solutions (Kafka, Event Hub, etc.).
  • Knowledge of database management (SQL and NoSQL) and advanced querying techniques.
  • Strong leadership abilities with prior experience managing or mentoring a team.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills, even under tight deadlines.
  • Clear communication skills to translate technical concepts into business value.
  • Professional proficiency in both Dutch and English
  • Preferably, you also have experience with data governance frameworks such as DAMA-DMBOK, and certifications in Azure, AWS, or GCP.
