24/7 A day in the life of a Valcon employee | Ian Hullegie

My day starts at 7:00, when I wake up, take a shower, and have two pieces of fruit for breakfast before heading out. I usually work from home one day a week, but I really enjoy being at the Valcon office. The energy, the collaboration, and the friendly atmosphere created by colleagues make it a great place to work. There’s something about face-to-face interaction that just makes things flow better.

To get to the office, I take the train from Amsterdam Central to Utrecht, where I transfer to another train to Utrecht Leidsche Rijn. The journey takes around 40 minutes, and the office’s convenient location makes the commute smooth and easy.

Once I arrive, my day begins with a short team check-in. It’s a nice mix of catching up on how everyone’s doing and aligning on the day’s priorities. After that, I usually get some focused time to dive into my own tasks before the meetings start. These can vary from day to day, and I also make sure to have moments to connect with colleagues,  whether to align on progress or simply check in on a more personal level.

I joined Valcon as a consultant in April, and my role focuses on supporting clients in adapting to changing environments so their operations continue to run effectively. I do this by analysing challenges, maintaining close contact with stakeholders and approaching organisational pain points with a strategic mindset.

I’m currently working for a Dutch client, a network operator, as part of a project team consisting of colleagues from both Valcon and the client, in which I’m responsible for my own workstream. I also support other teams and projects across various areas of expertise. Over the past few months, my role has expanded from supporting a single project to contributing to multiple initiatives and taking ownership of my own workstream. It’s been a great opportunity to learn how to collaborate effectively with multiple stakeholders, each with their own perspectives and expectations.

Through this experience, I’ve learned to balance different viewpoints and pressures while keeping everyone aligned and satisfied. Working with such a diverse range of colleagues and stakeholders has also helped me develop a broader perspective, leading to more creative and effective solutions. It’s improved the quality of my work and made it easier for me to adapt to different working styles.

Around lunchtime, I like to grab a sandwich with colleagues from a nearby deli or supermarket. If the weather allows, we take a walk together, a perfect way to recharge before the afternoon.

I usually aim to wrap up my work around 5:30 PM, although that sometimes depends on the period and project needs. After work, I enjoy football training, going for a run, or unwinding with my favourite Netflix series or some Champions League games.

Outside of work, I love playing football, spending time with friends, and relaxing in the sun with a drink. My weekends often start with a nice dinner out or a home-cooked meal with friends on Friday, football matches on Saturday, and family time on Sunday.

Looking ahead, I hope that in five years I’ll have delivered successful projects for a variety of clients, showcasing the value Valcon brings to their businesses. I also hope to see Valcon grow even further, strengthening the trust of our existing clients while expanding our reach. Personally, I aim to keep learning and developing, becoming an even more effective consultant capable of thriving in diverse environments.
