Enabling unified data governance through Databricks Unity Catalog

Situation

The client’s infrastructure lacked a unified framework, leading to inefficiencies, redundant data management processes and duplicated resources. Weak alignment between data governance administration and technical implementation resulted in incomplete data management solutions. Existing integrations were inefficient and failed to meet the requirements of key system users, causing latency issues and unnecessary data duplication.

Approach

Valcon built a self-service catalogue API enabling Unity Catalog for mortgage use cases, iterating rapidly based on stakeholder feedback. The solution was integrated with existing IAM controls within the client’s environment. A standardised data exchange solution was delivered on Databricks to minimise redundancy and streamline data processes, while unified data governance was implemented through Unity Catalog, providing a centrally managed platform and framework to improve oversight and compliance.

Results

Cost savings were achieved by reducing redundant data processes and standardising infrastructure, lowering Azure consumption costs and minimising the risk of local non-compliance. Infrastructure consolidation led to improved resource allocation and reduced latency, enhancing overall operational efficiency. A structured approach to data governance is now integrated by design into the technical implementation, enforcing compliance across all data domains and reducing the risk of data breaches and non-compliance penalties.
