Situation
Our client, the organisation responsible for balancing and settlement across the GB electricity market, is in the middle of Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement, the programme reshaping how settlement works nationally. As go-live neared, a serious gap opened up. The volume of sensitive data moving through the new system was climbing fast, while the client’s data governance, data protection and information security had not kept up. Without proper controls, they were exposed to real regulatory risk at the worst possible moment.
Valcon was brought in to assess where things stood, fast, and build a production-ready data governance capability before go-live.
Approach
Valcon ran a rapid discovery phase across Legal, InfoSec, IT and the business, then delivered a data governance and information protection capability built on Microsoft Purview.
- Core data governance policies were set across data classification, lifecycle management and data sharing, with clear guidance published across the organisation.
- A data ownership model was designed and put in place, with defined roles and policy accountability at every level.
- A Microsoft Purview MVP was delivered across four modules: Information Protection, Data Lifecycle Management, Data Loss Prevention and Insider Risk Management.
- Full training and handover meant internal teams could own, operate and scale the solution themselves from day one.
Results
The client went live with full regulatory protections working: automated detection of unauthorised data sharing, insider risk monitoring and documented breach management, all operational before go-live rather than bolted on after.
Data retention policies were implemented and tested against the client’s obligations under data protection law. The capability was built to stand on its own. Business users have clear self-serve policies, and the IT and InfoSec teams can extend it without calling consultants back in. The client came out of it with the expertise and ownership in-house, not a standing dependency on an outside partner.
