Modernising a Global Data Warehouse with Databricks

Accelerating retail availability reporting with Databricks and Power BI

Databricks
AWS
Modernising a Global Data Warehouse with Databricks
This is what we have achieved:
- 240 analysts from local markets and domain teams onboarded onto the new platform
- 3PB of data migrated, alongside 410 dashboards, 205 ETL containers and 600 scripts to Databricks
- End-users reported excellent support and clear communication throughout the data warehouse migration
- Accelerated delivery enabled immediate creation of new data products (SQL, Python, ML) and real-time collaboration
After the acquisition of a classifieds group in 2021, the acquiring organisation had to take over systems that used to be delivered by the former holding company. One of those systems was the on-premise Global Data Warehouse, which enabled both global and local analytics functions and offered standardised global metrics, reports and dashboards across legacy markets. The goal of the consultancy was to support the organisation to detach this on-premise Data Warehouse and move it to AWS in combination with Databricks.
The consultancy specifically partnered on project management skills and the technical skills to set up the architecture of Databricks as part of the target platform and market enablement support, in which change management and training were included to realise sustainable results.
The project team, consisting of 60 employees distributed across several workstreams, realised the migration in a year. During the mobilisation and discovery phase, a detailed analysis of the target strategy (including POCs), delivery approach, costs and timelines were delivered. During the delivery phase, the target platform was developed, tested and complied with the client’s data mesh principles, including decentralised data access management. In addition, the market enablement team was responsible for training and guiding end-users towards the adoption of the new data warehouse.

Accelerating retail availability reporting with Databricks and Power BI
This is what we have achieved:
- Reduced data processing time from 10 hours to 1 hour across 8–10 source systems, delivering 90% faster data availability within agreed business SLAs
- Increased data availability for decision-making by up to 20×, enabling richer and more timely insights
- Enabled analysts to query more than 3 years of historical data, compared to the previous 8-week reporting window
- Improved performance, data quality, security and governance through Databricks Unity Catalog and Power BI
- Provided users with more time and more data to make critical availability decisions
- Contributed to reductions in lost sales and improved customer satisfaction, resulting in up to a 0.9% reduction in lost revenue
Reporting on availability KPIs is a critical process within this home furniture Retailer aiming to reduce the number of sales lost due to insufficient stock levels at stores and increasing customer satisfaction. It has a weekly usage of 1700 users across all of the company and reports on 4 million item combinations at 500+ locations. Previously, the report was fully built on top of an Oracle DWH and Qlik. The DWH is regarded as a legacy system and the company aims to have migrated all reporting from Qlik to Power BI by 2025. Furthermore, the existing solution failed to meet business SLAs and provided insufficient data for analysts to perform critical analyses.
Valcon partnered with Databricks and Microsoft to fully transition the application to the company’s state of the art IDNAP data platform. The backend has been recreated and redesigned in Databricks Unity Catalogue and the front-end has been transitioned to Power BI. During the transition, several improvement were made to increase performance and data quality and known issues to business logic were fixed, while Unity Catalogue adds improved security and governance on the data models
