World of Data

By Sander de Jongh, Partner and Head of the Data Practice at Valcon

We live in a world of data. To say that it’s become the new currency is something of an understatement. It is the lifeblood of every government, energy provider, retailer, bank, manufacturer, transport company, educational establishment, charity. You name it, data runs through it.

Data soaring in importance

And in recent years, as we have come to understand its value, we have grasped how important the different elements of data management are. Data storage has traversed from bricks-and-mortar data centres, to the cloud and data lakes. Data governance is a practice that is developing in tandem with our understanding of the importance of data – the policies that protect how it is stored, processed, protected, disposed of are vital.

And data science – how we can interpret, learn and derive insight from the data we collect. We have moved on from concepts like business intelligence and data analysis to data science, as volumes of data have grown and the practice incorporates principles from AI and machine learning, in addition to maths and stats.

All of these practices work together to help us make sense of the world of data.

In the data headlights

But it’s tricky for organisations when faced with the data challenge. They understand they have to engage with and invest in data initiatives, but often don’t know where to start. And due to the enormity of the task, many switch off, put their heads in the sand.

We’ll help you make sense of the World of Data

Over the course of the next few months, Valcon is launching its World of Data series. We’ll take a look at the stories – how data management, governance, science and insight has transformed different sectors and solved various problems and issues. We’ll talk about the big trends in the World of Data at the moment and where we see the industry going in the future.

We hope you can join us on our journey around the World of Data.
