Attracting top talent for IT transformations and optimisations

By Martin Otten & Thomas Erichsen | Partners | Technology

At the beginning of 2025, Valcon welcomed Rivean Capital, a European private equity firm, as our new investor. This has solidified the focus on technology as a significant aspect of our growth strategy. In the Nordics, we particularly target IT transformation projects for companies that struggle to fully leverage their software, AI or data. As part of this transformation, we are expanding our partner group and our overall workforce with individuals who have technology as their core competence.

In a recent interview with Danish news outlet InsideBusiness, Nordic technology partners Martin Otten and Thomas Erichsen shared their insights about Valcon’s technological focus and growth plans.

Welcoming experienced tech talent to our partner group

In April, we expanded our partner group with the addition of an experienced international profile, Martin Otten. This strategic hire reflects our ongoing commitment to enhancing our focus on IT and technology, aligning with the industry’s trend of prioritising consultants with deep expertise and sector experience over generalist consultants.

Martin Otten brings over 30 years of experience in advising companies on leveraging the latest technology to create value. He has held several leading positions with global players in the IT scene and software companies, including as sales director at the software companies Mendix, OutSystems and Thales, all of which develop IT platforms and solutions for businesses across Europe. With this, Martin possesses a strong toolkit to help strengthen Valcon’s technology capability in the Nordics.

“Throughout my career, I have always been more of a ‘consultant’ in the technology field, where I have taken on an advisory role to understand the client’s problems and needs, and how they can best use certain types of technology. At Valcon, which I have previously been acquainted with, I can utilise those skills and face new challenges, which were significant reasons for my acceptance to become a partner,” says Martin.

Empowering clients with tailored solutions

In his new role, Martin Otten is responsible for delivering solutions to clients in the Nordics, with a particular focus on Denmark and Sweden, addressing various needs related to IT transformations and optimisations. This involves helping clients replace systems, develop and execute various business strategies based on technology, and implement different data and coding platforms in a way that optimises business processes.

Additionally, Martin will focus on how our Nordic clients can harness the latest technology to achieve their growth ambitions. Despite the Nordics being ahead in technology adoption, many corporate clients are facing backlogs of projects they wish to execute but lack the necessary resources.

“Despite significant optimism about new technologies among companies, many of them do not have long-term strategies for how they should concretely use these technologies or how to address issues such as governance. Therefore, it will be an important part of the advisory to clients; how to look further into the future when implementing new technologies and data solutions.” Martin adds.

Strategic growth and future aspirations

Thomas Erichsen, partner and head of Valcon’s Nordic digital department, emphasises that the technology area will be a key focus area for Valcon in the near and long-term future.

“Valcon is on a significant growth journey, and there is no doubt that we believe in and want to support our clients’ projects in digitalisation and transformation of work processes using technology. However, this is done from a perspective that our advisory in digitalisation is more aimed at bringing our clients’ business strategies to life rather than deep IT implementation, although we are also involved in the execution part,” says Thomas.

He adds, in line with previous statements from our CEO Geert van den Goor, that Valcon is expected to grow significantly in the Nordics over the coming years through a combination of organic growth, partnerships and M&A opportunities. Our largest growth is expected within our services in data and technology, while we also anticipate growth in classic consulting.

Committed to attracting diverse talent

As we expand our technological focus, our pursuit of talent from both within and outside the consulting industry is not new. Recently, we welcomed Morten Ib Ingstrup to lead our data and analytics department in the Nordics. We are actively seeking experienced talent to remain competitive, particularly in industries such as pharmaceuticals, finance and insurance.

We have adapted our recruitment strategy to focus on the intersection of competencies in commercial understanding, technical strengths, execution and industry experience. This shift away from pure generalist experience is new for our industry, but we believe it leads to more relevant dialogues, precise advisory and better solutions for our clients.

“If you look at the typical consulting team at Valcon, it consists of individuals with both domain and sector expertise, who can engage in dialogue with clients and, in some cases, challenge them on their approaches. This dynamic among the consultants at Valcon is something that clients appreciate, and which I will also focus on and participate in with the areas I will now be working on,” Martin concludes.

We are excited about the future and the contributions that Martin and our expanding team will make to our clients’ success.
