24/7 A Day In The Life of a Valcon Employee | Natalie Small

As a consultant within Valcon’s graduate academy, my days are filled with a variety of tasks and responsibilities. While my role has changed over the past year, I am currently on the bench and contributing to the development of new internal services while studying for my upcoming exams. Before entering the academy, I ran my own consultancy and the services I offered were somewhat intuitive rather than working from any form of framework. Since joining Valcon I have learnt so much to help strengthen my role as a consultant, gaining certifications in Prince2, Scaled Agile and Agile Project Management.

A typical day for me starts with a 30-minute catch-up on emails, followed by revising for my exams. I spend most of my day contributing to the development of blog content, service playbooks, and internal SharePoint sites. I am also lucky to be part of many of our service teams, which keeps me busy and helps me learn new things.

Although I work from home more than the office due to having my dog, I love a mix of both. I find myself much more productive at home, but I also enjoy the social aspect of being in the office. I typically commute into London once a fortnight.

I love cooking so I usually repurpose leftover dinner for lunch when I’m working from home, but when I’m in the Valcon office or a client site, I tend to head to Itsu or Wasabi for a sushi fix. I try to wrap up my workday by 5 pm, but when I’m engrossed in what I’m doing, I can lose track of time and end up working until 6:30 pm. The flexibility around hours that Valcon offers is one of the many benefits of working with the company.

In my free time, I love running, reading, and taking my dog out on long walks. I also have an allotment that I tend to during the spring and summer months. My weekends typically involve dog walks, allotment trips, and spending time at the pub on Saturdays. Sundays are reserved for long runs, and I aim to keep my schedule free to rest and recharge for the week ahead.

In five years, I hope to have a house with a nice garden for my dog and vegetables. To get there, I need to keep working hard, learning new skills, and contributing to the growth of Valcon. I find consulting really rewarding and I love being able to do my job in such a supportive business.
